Man set to avoid jail over tragedy

BEST MATE: Dylan Carey-Craig died in a crash at Maryland in 2016.A MAN who caused the death of his best mate and “brother” in a crash at Maryland has been convicted in Newcastle District Court.

Cody Stanley, 20, of Wallsend, appears set to avoid a jail sentence after a judge noted the “especially tragic” circumstances of the case, in which Stanley pleaded guilty to driving occasioning death and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He admitted to causing the death of 20-year-old Dylan Carey-Craig, and seriously injuring a female passenger in the other vehicle, in 2016.

Stanley’s barrister, Peter Harper, told the court during sentencing submissions on Friday that Mr Carey-Craig came to live with his client after his parents diedin a car crash.He said Stanley regarded Mr Carey-Craig as his own brother, noting that members of Mr Carey-Craig’s family, who were present in the public gallery, still supported him.

The matter was adjourned to see if Stanley is suitable for an intensive corrections order, a custodial sentence served in the community.
